How do I calculate square footage?

Measure the length and the width in feet, then multiply them. A room 12 ft long by 10 ft wide is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. If a measurement includes inches, convert them first: 6 inches is 0.5 ft, so 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft. This calculator takes feet and inches separately so you never have to convert by hand.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

There are 9 square feet in one square yard, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 = 9. To convert square feet to square yards, divide by 9: 120 sq ft ÷ 9 = 13.33 sq yd. Carpet and some flooring are priced by the square yard, so this conversion matters when comparing quotes.

How do I estimate the cost of flooring for a room?

Multiply the square footage by the price per square foot. A 120 sq ft room at $5 per sq ft costs 120 × $5 = $600 for materials. Pros usually recommend ordering about 10% extra for cuts and waste, so budget for roughly 132 sq ft on a room this size.
