Tax amount and total for any price — or work backwards from a total.
Results update instantly as you type. Use your exact local combined rate (state + city + county) for an exact figure.
Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal: tax = price × (rate ÷ 100), then add it to the price for the total. For example, $129.99 at 8.25% gives tax of $129.99 × 0.0825 = $10.72 and a total of $140.71.
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal: pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). A $140.71 total at 8.25% gives $140.71 ÷ 1.0825 = $129.99 before tax. Switch this calculator to "From a total" mode and it does the math for you.
Rates vary widely: state base rates range from 0% (for example Oregon and Montana have no statewide sales tax) up to 7.25% in California, and cities and counties add their own — combined rates can exceed 10% in places like Chicago and parts of Louisiana. Check your receipt or your state's tax authority site for your exact local combined rate, then enter it above.
